Ricardo knew he was destined to play music. It all started when he was five years old. One morning when his parents were asleep, he pushed his hand in the 8 track player and got it stuck, it was the first time he had touched a music player, and a DJ was born. As a boy of about ten back in Trinidad and Tobago he used to listen religiously to the likes of Rennie Bishop, Glen “The Thunder” Antoine, and Ian “The Goose” Eligon. He also listened to many of the mix tape icons of that era such as Bryan Regis, Teddy Mohammed, XTC, and in addition he liked listening to the mobile DJs such as D Professionals, DJ Cin, DJ Amitaf and Rocking Randy to name a few. In those days he idolized disc jockeying so much that at about the age of thirteen he would sneak out at night and move speaker boxes for D Professionals for free.
At the age of eighteen when he graduated St. Georges College High School in Trinidad, he went to New York to study. Immediately after enrolling in Kingsborough Community College, he went to the school radio station and secured a job for a year and half playing house music. He became the production director there and was the DJ at various clubs and college events. Although he enjoyed playing house music and it was a lot of fun, something was still missing, he wanted to go back to his roots. He would frequent the local Brooklyn party scene where the “Original” GB Productions, DJ Anonymous, The Supreme Team, King Chow, Mad Man Maddy and Sweet Needle Scobie were blazing the parties every weekend. He solicited them all to join and play with them, longing to command the crowd and have them begging for more. Unfortunately at the time they all already had their full crews working with them and there was no room for him, he was disappointed, but not discouraged. One day at a block party Ricardo met the DJs of Sound City, after deciding they liked his style, they asked him to join them as Sound City 3 “D PROFESSOR”. Ricardo played with them for most of the 90’s- about ten years, and then in 1997 decided it was time for a new challenge and decided to venture out on his own. The idea of Back to Basics was born, taking things back to basics DJ Back to Basics took his career and experiences to yet another level.
Over the years he has refined and defined his musical experience into an art form that has made him become the ultimate Party Rocker! Not only rocking the parties, Back 2 Basics can be found on the road with Sesame Flyers in Brooklyn for Labor Day, at Toronto with Carnival Nationz, with Natural Freaks for Miami Carnival as well as in Jamaica and London. At home in his native Trinidad, Back to Basics joined the Tribe family in 2009 and can be found rocking the road there for Trinidad Carnival.
The newest venture of Ricardo’s was to begin Back to Basics Entertainment which started with smaller events in the early 2000’s but reached amazing heights with Shine in 2005.
